Planning Ahead

My childhood memories are littered with hot glue and glitter and paste. I grew up in a creative household, with projects often taking over the kitchen table.  My father is a writer, photographer and painter, and my mom is a writer, crafter and collector. There's no question about how I turned out the way I did.

In the late 70's and early 80's, cross stitching was cool. My mom and my aunt's would spend their free time making intricate projects. I watched with admiration, as images seem to suddenly appear. Sewing has never been my forte. I knew I was creative, but searched for a medium in which would enable me to fully express my creativity.

From as early as I can remember, I have been repurposing jewelry. I have always taken necklaces apart, combining different elements from each piece to form new jewelry. It was fun and I thought everyone did this. In eighth grade, my mom gave me permission to destroy an old telephone, and I used the wires and parts to make earrings. (Steam punk before it was cool!) Even as an adult, I would always repair my own jewelry, often changing up necklaces by combining charms and pendants from various pieces.

It wasn't until recently that I realized "Maybe I could make money doing this." I was searching for a pair of small silver earrings to wear everyday. Unable to find the perfect pair, I made them. Immediately I received compliments on the earrings, inspiring me to create more.

Fast forward a few months, and my jewelry is featured in Lonnie's Art Gallery, I have a World Tour scheduled for the upcoming market season, and now, this weekend, will be for sale at West Elm in Chicago. (Yes, West Elm!!)

Thankfully, a few months ago, I decided to plan ahead. Often I wing it and allow the project to determine the results. This was too important to me. I set a goal to have a set number of earrings, bracelets and necklaces completed by the beginning Market Season. (see 2014 World Tour). There were times when I had to reassure my husband, Erik, that I did in fact have a plan and that I wasn't simply hoarding.

Well, my plan has paid off.

When the call came in Monday that Kismet Junk jewelry was invited to participate in the event at West Elm in Lincoln Park, I was giddy. I couldn't sleep the past two nights and still, with a lack of sleep, am overly energetic today.

I sat down at my work table, with my coffee, trying to think of what I needed to do in preparation for this upcoming event. I've decided my planning has paid off, because I realized I already have a complete inventory line ready to go!

Instead of scrambling to be ready, I will be spending this week creating a few more pieces - solely because I am so excited! I thoroughly enjoy making Kismet Junk jewelry, expressing my creativity and am looking forward to others enjoying the jewelry as much as I do!

50 shade of Anais Nin

Anais Nin was a woman ahead of her time. By today's standards, she would be like most woman, trying to find out who she is, navigating a path through life and trying to juggle her needs versus the words expectations of her.

You may recognize her name as it pops-up on pinterest boards as the author of a quote. However, few know that Anais as the E.L. James of her generation. She blazed a trail for modern female authors. Back then is was shocking for a woman to write erotic fiction, however, now she would probably be interviewed on Good Morning America.

She is often romantically linked with Henry Miller, yet her husband Hugh Guiler is rarely mentioned. She even married a second time, without ever divorcing Guiler. Her life story sounds like an epic movie with scenes taking place in romantic locations such as Cuba, France, New York and California.

Anais Nin led a complex life and poured her thoughts into beautifully written poems, essays, novels, diaries and - most popular, her quotes. Here are a few favorites. One is surely to speak directly to your soul.

Hello Lover!

Carrie Bradshaw loved her Manolo Blahnik's. Remember the "Hello Lover." episode? So, it seems only fitting that Sarah Jessica Parker partnered with with Manolo Blahnik to develop a her own signature collection of shoes, handbags and clothing.
"I wanted to go back in time to the simple shoe." SJP stated in a recent interview. "That was really our point of inspiration."  She partnered with CEO George Malkemus II to create this collection of pretty pumps, strappy sandals and fabulous footwear that even Carrie would love!
Watch the WCL interview
Today, SJP appeared on Windy City Live, and was as charming and honest as ever. She described the shoe line, how her fashion is continually inspired, and a how her fashion sense has transcended to her children.

For this real life collection, she wanted to create shoes that were timeless, practical and fit a wide range of women. The are more affordable than Manolo's, but still range from $195 to $485, and the handbags are around $375. It may seem pricey, but the customer is paying for the quality. The shoes are made with Italian leather and designed to last forever, with look relevant forever.

"Its an investment purchase." Parker added. These shoes are designed to become a dear friend in your fashion life, with each style having its own name. 'Carrie' is a beautiful t-strap pump and is named after her infamous Sex in the City character. Other shoes, have names such as "Maud", "Diana", and "Ina".
View the collection on Nordstrom

The entire collection can be viewed online at Nordstrom.com. So, are these shoes you are going to have to have? As Carrie Bradshaw stated, "Men I may not know, but shoes I know!"

What your house says about you

This quote is so true. Its not necessarily the things surrounding you which make a house a home, its the people you share your house with. People make the memories. Try incorporating pieces into your decorating that represent a memory.
Here is one example...

My husband, Erik, grew up on a farm. He had his own poultry business by the time he was nine. He would collect eggs from his 200+ chickens and sell them to the local restaurants in town. Still to this day, he has a love of chickens. While my decorating style is far from country, I look for ways to combine both of our interests into decorating. We have a vintage egg scale on a book shelf, a funky rooster trivet from Spain, and he even placed a miniature chicken in one of our house plants.

Chicken crates has always interested me. I love how people incorporate them into their decor. Here are a few very creative ideas:

Add a casters to give a crate an industrial look.

Reinforced as risers under bed, crates add an element of outdoors.

The hot trend in reusing crates is as an outdoor table.

Displays mulitples of any item makes a statement, including crates.

Roll it indoors or outdoors depending on your need.

Crates are agreat way to add storage in a small bathroom.

What a creative idea. The crate is the base for an outdoor chandelier.

Add old ban wood to the top of a crate to make a table.
My favorite!

A crate can become a casual coffee table by adding casters and glass.

It can't be said any clearer than the quote above... Make your house a home by filling it with memories and mementos of times with the ones you love. In my house, it includes chickens, camera's, vintage advertising and wood crates. Think about what is a common thread throughout your lifetime memories and finds ways to incorporate it into your decorating.
